Michael Kenna's techniques: D76 and TriX
"His prints are 7 1/2 x 7 1/12 inches on glossy fibre based paper. There is pronounced grain in the dark areas, which he has obviously burned in as some of the skies are black, more so than even a red filter gives.
I decided to read a bit about his technique which he is very open and detailed about on his website. It seems that all of the magic takes place in the darkroom print and he is not that inspired by film developing, seeing it as a means to a negative rather than an art form itself.
What I did notice is that he uses the classic D76 TriX combo but he rates it at ISO 250 and processes it for 11 1/2 mins at 20C. That seems like an awful long time given the box stated 10mins when rated at 400."
